Lanai is a small island and has always been very scarcely populated so it is not surprising that Lanai has always been under the control of nearby Maui.

In the 18th Century, Lanai was suffered from a revenge attack by Chief Kalaniopuu of Big Island who had failed in his attempt to invade Maui. Lanai suffered greatly and was virtually depopulated.

Geography of Lanai

Lanai is the sixth largest Hawaiian Island and is 18 miles long and 13 miles wide. It is located at 20°50′N 156°56′W.

Lanai was formed from a single volcanoe called Palawai which is now extinct.
